How to Check If a Digital Safe Is BIS Certified in India — And Why It Matters

Walk into any online marketplace and you'll find hundreds of digital safes, many claiming to meet "international standards" with no verifiable certification. BIS certification is the one mark that actually means something in India. Here's how to verify it — and why it should be your first filter when buying.

What Is BIS Certification?

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is India's national standards body, operating under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs. When a product carries the BIS mark (formerly called the ISI mark), it means the product has been independently tested against a defined Indian Standard and the manufacturer's facility has been audited.

For steel safes and lockers, the relevant standard is IS 7085, which specifies construction requirements, locking mechanism standards, and resistance to forced entry.

• Steel thickness and material quality verification
• Lock mechanism strength testing
• Forced entry resistance (prying, drilling, impact)
• Door bolt length and count requirements
• Hinge construction standards

How to Verify BIS Certification

Method 1: Check the product itself

A BIS-certified safe will display the BIS logo (a triangle with "BIS" inside) along with a licence number. The licence number format is: CM/L-XXXXXXX.

Method 2: Search the BIS CARE app or website

Download the BIS CARE app (available on Android and iOS) or visit the BIS website at bis.gov.in. Enter the manufacturer's name or licence number to verify the certification is current and genuine.

Method 3: Ask the seller directly

Any legitimate manufacturer will provide their BIS licence number without hesitation. If a seller can't or won't provide this, treat the product as uncertified.

Red Flags That Indicate an Uncertified Safe

• "BIS compliant" language without an actual licence number ("compliant" means nothing; "certified" requires a licence)
• No manufacturer name or address on the product
• Price significantly below comparable certified products
• Chinese brand with an Indian-sounding marketing name
• No warranty documentation

Why Uncertified Safes Are a False Economy

A ₳2,500 uncertified safe uses thin steel (often under 0.7mm), unreliable electronics that fail within 2–3 years, and locks that can be opened with basic tools. If your safe contains jewellery worth ₳1 lakh, spending ₳2,000 more on a BIS-certified model is self-evidently the right call.
