How to Assemble an Office Chair at Home: Step-by-Step Guide
Share
Most office chairs, including Royalsafeco chairs, arrive in a box for simple DIY assembly. With the manual and the tools in the box, it usually takes 10–15 minutes. This guide walks through the usual steps for a revolving office chair, then shows how to set it up for your desk.
Before you start: always follow the manual that came with your chair — parts and screws differ by model. The steps below are the general order for most office chairs.
What Is Usually in the Box
- Base (5-star) and wheels (casters)
- Gas lift (cylinder) with a cover
- Seat with the tilt mechanism, or a separate mechanism plate
- Backrest
- Armrests (on most models)
- Screws, an Allen key and the manual
Step-by-Step Assembly
Step 1: Unbox and check the parts
Lay everything on a clean floor or a mat so nothing gets scratched. Match the parts against the list in the manual before you begin.
Step 2: Fit the wheels to the base
Turn the base upside down and push each wheel firmly into its hole until it clicks into place.
Step 3: Insert the gas lift
Turn the base the right way up and place the gas lift into the centre hole. Slide the cover over it if your chair has one.
Step 4: Attach the mechanism to the seat
If the mechanism is separate, turn the seat upside down and screw the mechanism plate on. Check which way is the front — the lever usually sits on the right side under the seat.
Step 5: Fix the armrests
Screw the armrests to the underside of the seat. Keep the screws slightly loose until both are in, then tighten fully.
Step 6: Attach the backrest
Screw the backrest to the seat or mechanism as shown in the manual, then tighten all screws with the Allen key.
Step 7: Join the seat to the base
Place the seat onto the top of the gas lift and sit down firmly once — your weight presses the cylinder into place.
Set Up the Chair for Your Desk
- Height: pull the lever and adjust until your feet are flat and your knees are at about 90°.
- Back: sit back fully so your lower back touches the backrest.
- Arms: elbows should rest near desk level with relaxed shoulders.
- Tilt: use the tilt to lean back on calls and lock it upright when you work.
Common Problems and Quick Fixes
- Chair wobbles: re-tighten all screws after the first week of use.
- Seat does not go up or down: check that the lever touches the gas lift button under the seat.
- Wheel keeps falling out: press it in again firmly until it clicks.
- Back feels loose: tighten the backrest screws with the Allen key.
